We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate.

The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.

For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.

HOME has been made for you : share it! And act for the planet.

    Home Grown

    Locavore Hotel Experiences

    harvest time!

You’re sick of the lies: Belgian chocolate (from New Jersey), organic lilac lotion (made from myxlethgrz-8), Real Housewives of, well, anywhere. What’s a purist to do?

Live off the land. And by “live,” we mean “journey,” and by “land,” we mean “flowery acres, organic herb and vegetable gardens, rippling lakes, and global farmers markets where you can pick, pluck, squeeze, catch, or simply stomp locavore-happy grounds.”

    country charm!

The Inn at Palmetto Bluff,South Carolina
How’s this for an eco checklist? First you tour chef Chris Blobaum’s garden, inspecting the blueberries, lettuces, and asparagus. Then join the on-staff naturalist for alligator tracking and owl prowling on the 20,000 acres. Next it’s crabbing and shrimping on the river. (The chef will prepare your catch for supper, skipper.) To recover, hit the spa for a signature scrub (milk and rosebud, wild rice and mulberry) and mint-infused water made with ingredients from the garden.

    buonissimo!

    Lo Scoglio,Amalfi Coast
It’s a little slice of heaven in a small fishing village. At the (shockingly low-priced) family-run restaurant and hotel, son Tommaso De Simone cooks Nonna’s recipes using the produce (fava beans, tomatoes, wild arugula, artichokes, escarole) that papa Beppe picked that morning in his fields (along with the fish brought in from the dock that day). Beppe is an amazing character, and he’d be happy to take you on his rounds if you ask.

    chop this!

      Mandarin Oriental Chiang Mai,Thailand
You’ll get a crash course in Thai gastronomy through the Culinary Academy. The experience starts with a guided tour of the bustling local food market, then it’s back to the hotel’s gardens to pick the vegetables and herbs you’ll use (and taste) in the cooking class. On the menu: spicy lemongrass salad with tamarind sauce, grilled prawn soup with holy leaves. Way to cook it up and chow it down.

    how does your garden grow?

    Viceroy Palm Springs,California
It’s nature’s bounty inside and out. The on-site desert herb garden is used by both the spa staff to make the signature scrub (a mix of lemongrass, lavender, neroli, and sage) and by the new (super-young, super-cute) chef James Bailey, who will let you join his rounds as he clips unusual herbs and explains what you’ll be eating and cocktailing later.

    this land is your land!

    Monachyle Mhor, Scotland
It doesn’t get much greener than a hotel located in Trossachs National Park. Owner and chef Tom Lewis leads lads and lassies through the estate’s 2,000 farm animal-filled acres to forage for mushrooms beside the loch and pick fresh produce for pickling, preserving, or eating straight away. Homemade jam and bread, fresh eggs, and locally caught fish? Of course.

    the awesome azure!

     The Royal Hawaiian,Hawaii
Azure chef Jon Matsubara attends the Honolulu fish auction at Pier 38 (the only one of its kind between Tokyo and Maine) at 5:30 every morning to purchase the catch of the day directly from the source. It’s an amazing, rare experience — and you’re welcome to join. Pesco-tacular!

    freshly caught supper!

     Hotel Metropole,Monte-Carlo
But if you’re after the fanciest fishing trip on the planet, the concierge at this over-the-top Riviera resort will arrange it. You leave for the Nice harbor at the crack of dawn and go net trawling in the blue seas until midafternoon (equipment and VIP lunch provided, bien sûr). When it’s all done, the hotel’s Michelin-starred chefs will prepare your catch for dinner.
    Perfect for your no-carbon diet.

If u travel for the food

It’s the year of the cookbooks from the world’s most innovative chefs. From France, Joël Robuchon’s The Complete Robuchon, without photos so you don’t feel intimidated. From Spain, Ferran Adrià’s A Day at ElBulli, with highbrow treatises on the creative method. From Chicago, Grant Achatz’s Alinea, which has a nifty companion website. From England, Heston Blumenthal’s The Big Fat Duck Cookbook, which weighs more than you do, even after one of these supersonic meals.

    bike!

If  u Travel for the Kit
Here’s a pretty cashmere blankie and matching pillow (the orange is very Hermès). Assorted Korres beauty products in little TSA-friendly bottles. A shoe suitcase that fits a dozen pairs of heels. And outrageously elaborate French travel trunks for movies, baby, bikes, and plants.

    cozy!

If  u Travel for the Stuff
For Italian fashion without Milanese sales clerk attitude, shop Yoox for René Caovilla heels, Roberta di Camerino styles, and Faliero Sarti scarves. Paris boutique Colette has darling Les Ateliers Ruby helmets and Roger Vivier shoes. Fresh’s lush Crème Ancienne is handmade in a Czech monastery from a Roman gladiator recipe. Add charm and cutes to su casa with an egg pot and a teapot with a cold. Throw your Moroccan slipper-clad feet onto a handcrafted leather pouf and brew some Sri Lankan Silver Tips tea.

It’s a pocket of exotic in that paradise you call home.

    FAVORITE MOVIE: Kite Runner
Finally, our favorite book has an equally fabulous movie. This adapted screen play from award winning author Khaled Hosseini is a profoundly emotional tale of friendship, family, devastating mistakes and redeeming love. The movie follows the friendship of a young boy and his childhood friend through their days in Kabul to their adulthood in separate countries. Brought back together by love and war, the movie depicts the most tumultuous times in Afghanistan through the eyes of a young boy. This heartwarming story of coming of age and facing one’s demons is altogether hopeful.  DreamWorks took a risk by turning such a wonderful piece of literature into Hollywood history, but we’re happy they did.  The Kite Runner is out in theaters December 14th.

    Persepolis

This critically acclaimed film takes the United States by storm, outlining the autobiography of Iranian citizen, Marjane Satrapi.  Her personal struggles seem to mimic the countries struggles as she grows into a young woman and the country faces the Islamist Revolution and Iran-Iraq war.  She seeks her freedom, both from the veil thrust upon her as a teenager, as well as through the introduction to the forbidden punk culture.  Yet as she watches the revolution unfold, her life as an Iranian will never be the same.  Marjane’s purpose in telling this story is to show the other side of a country known only as negative by so many.  Not even out on full release and already nominated for numerous awards,Sony Picture Classic's newest film. Persepolis is a must see this month.

    《Shopping Design》

    《Shopping Design》

“A house is a machine for living in.” Le Corbusier

“The house that would please me would be some great room where one taiked to one’s friends in one corner, and ate in another and slept in another and work in another.”From 英國知名家具設計師 William Morris

    New York Asia Week Preview

Focus on New York Asia Week

Early spring is the time of year when the art scene in New York City is given over to all things Asian. Dealers, curators, academics, and collectors from all over the world descend to attend this focus on Asian arts — New York Asia Week.

Traditionally, the art fairs, gallery exhibitions, and symposia during New York Asia Week revolved around ancient and dynastic period pieces. But because of the drastic reduction in available pieces from those eras due to increasing market demand, as well as questions of cultural patrimony and provenance, New York Asia Week has expanded its scope. The material on view now includes artwork from less traditional regions and more of a focus on contemporary Asian art. The timing for this shift couldn't be better, as the interest in and market for contemporary Asian work is experiencing a well-publicized explosion worldwide.

Below you'll find information about the two major fairs taking place during New York Asia Week. Be sure to check local gallery listings as well for special Asia Week exhibitions that tie in to the fairs. The New Yorker is a great source for comprehensive information regarding current gallery exhibitions.

Located in the newly renovated Sofitel Los Angeles, SIMON L.A. is a welcome addition to L.A’s local dining scene—not to mention right across the street form Club Monaco’s Beverly Center Store. Café Cluny

This new West Village corner bistro is the latest from Lynn Wagenknecht, Judi Wong, and Steven Abramowitz — the team behind The Odeon and Cafe Luxembourg. Both its charming character and interesting food make Café Cluny a great addition to the village restaurant scene.  Its interesting décor of bird dioramas, bathroom wallpaper and portraits sketched by a Central Park artist give it a quirky personality that sets it apart from its West Village neighbors. On top of that the food is delicious. From the beet salad with figs and goat cheese to the hanger steak and short ribs with foie gras,  their French inspired menu is full of flavor and sure to please your discerning palette.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love

Muchacha viendo pájaros- Artist: Manuel Alvarez BravoMiami is now one of the hottest art travel destinations on the international art fair circuit. This is partly due to the phenomenal energy Art Basel Miami Beach and its satellite fairs have bestowed on the city's cultural front. All the hype surrounding its new found "cultural" status overlooks the fact that Miami's flavor comes in large part from its evolution into a Latin American city.

Following that trend, Merrill Lynch takes advantage of its Miami position as an important Latin American business, banking, and media center to showcase its participation in the Miami art scene with Merrill Lynch arteaméricas - The Latin American Art Fair. The show features artists representing nearly all regions of Latin America, as well as Latin-American ex-pats working in the United States and the Iberian Peninsula.

Pablo Picasso may never have set foot on American soil, but many 20th century artists took their cues from his noteworthy paintings.  Works by nine diverse American artists, such as Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Arshile Gorky and Roy Lichtenstein, will be juxtaposed with Picasso’s to examine the role Picasso played in the development of modern American art.

The exhibition is on view from September 28, 2006 through January 28, 2007 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.  The exhibition will then travel to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (February 25 – May 28, 2007) and then the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (June 17, 2007 – September 9, 2007).

    Focus on Amsterdam

We take you to the "City of Canals — Amsterdam — in our second visit to The Netherlands this art season. Due to the city's explosive growth during the 17th Century, which is generally referred to as the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam has one of the largest historic centers in Europe. Its familiar architecture, art of the Dutch Renaissance Masters, and a reputation as a liberal and open-minded society all stem from that period in Amsterdam's history.

Today, Amsterdam is a thriving contemporary city with a growing influence on trends in cutting-edge art, architecture, and design.

       SPECIAL EDITION

    Focus on Chicago

Art Travel Guide is pleased to provide our readers with a Special Edition about Chicago. Chicago is our hometown, therefore it is difficult to be unbiased, but Chicago is really one of the best cities in America. The city is the birthplace of modern architecture, with an unparalleled skyline which can be seen from our beautiful lakefront parks. The restaurant scene is legendary, with some of the top chefs in the country calling Chicago home. And of course, Chicago boasts one of the largest and most vibrant cultural communities anywhere. The anchor event for the week is Art Chicago, the modern and contemporary art fair. This is long before The Armory Show in New York or Art Basel Miami Beach. This annual spring event has gone through some ownership and name changes over the years. Now under the The Merchandise Mart’s stewardship, Art Chicago is poised to regain its important status on the international art fair circuit. This year the fair has many significant international galleries returning after long absences, which guarantees the opportunity to see and collect world-class art.

    Focus on Germany

This is Art Travel Guide's third installment in our series about 2007 as a rare year in which several international art events take place concurrently in Europe. In this issue, our focus turns to Germany, as we spotlight documenta 12 in Kassel and skulptur projekte münster 07 in Muenster, which is about two hours northwest of Kassel. Plan on spending a couple days in both towns so you can immerse yourself in the local flavor along with the art to be displayed at these two important shows.

    documenta 12
    June 16 – September 23, 2007
    Fridericianum Museum
    Kassel

documenta has taken place every five years since 1955. This impressive compendium of current artistic trends was initially founded as a vehicle to reintroduce post-war Germany into the international contemporary cultural milieu. Each documenta exhibition has been directed by a different person, who develops the theme that frames the event. This year, curator Roger M. Buergel is the event's artistic director and art historian Ruth Noack is the curator.

An even rarer international art event is "sculpture projects muenster," which takes place once a decade. The exhibition focuses on site-specific installation projects all over the city. Among the 35 participating artists are Guillaume Bijl, Isa Genzken, Mike Kelley, Bruce Nauman, Rosemarie Trockel, and Pae White, and each of the artists' projects is described on the event's Web site.

This is a great time to see a great city in its ascendance, with everything one would expect in a modern world-class capital city — museums, music, shopping, beautiful city parks, and more. Of course, one can’t mention Buenos Aires without acknowledging its special contribution to dance and music — the Tango!

    Focus on Venice

Muchacha viendo pájaros- Artist: Manuel Alvarez BravoToward the end of the 19th century, the once opulent and powerful Italian city of Venice had fallen on hard times. Venice’s Golden Age in the late Renaissance was dimmed by invasions, wars, and a loss of its economic influence. In 1895, by which time Venice had definitely lost its shine, local civic promoters founded the Venice Biennale to highlight the city’s rich cultural history. Their efforts met success, and today, the Biennale (by which it is informally referred) is among the most widely anticipated art expositions in the world.

It now encompasses the Giardini (where several national pavilions are located), the Arsenale (the ancient shipbuilding works), and many other venues in the city. The modern, multi-dimensional Biennale is a must-see for any art enthusiast.

    Focus on Basel

Every 10 years the world is treated to a confluence of art events and festivals that engulf Europe in a transnational pilgrimage. 2007 is one of those rare years in which four major European art events can be experienced together. The journey begins with the opening of the Venice Biennale, which Art Travel Guide featured in the last issue. The next stop is Basel, for the 38th annual edition of Art Basel and the concurrent fairs taking place around the Swiss city. Following Art Basel is Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany, which occurs only once every five years and will be the focus of our next issue. Rarest of all is the nearby Skulptur Projekte in Münster, which is presented every 10 years.

Once again this June, the beautiful ancient city of Basel hosts more than 400 of the world's most important art dealers during the spectacular Art Basel 2007. For a relatively small city, Basel is rich in cultural offerings. There are many top-tier museums that coordinate their exhibitions to add to the overall experience of visiting Basel during the Art Basel fair. Below you will find the main art events comprising Art Basel, listed along with a sampling of the exhibitions on view at local museums, as well as our suggestions on where to stay and dine while you enjoy the fair.

    Focus on Buenos Aires

Muchacha viendo pájaros- Artist: Manuel Alvarez BravoFounded in the 16th century, Buenos Aires has a fascinating and turbulent history. Despite its ups and downs, the city has always been an important commercial and cultural hub in the Southern Hemisphere and remains so today. Argentina suffered a severe economic crisis at the turn of the 21st century, but is experiencing a remarkable recovery that has been underway for the last several years. This is a great time to see a great city in its ascendance, with everything one would expect in a modern world-class capital city — museums, music, shopping, beautiful city parks, and more. Of course, one can’t mention Buenos Aires without acknowledging its special contribution to dance and music — the Tango!
